Hey,
I am looking for something I can use to record notes in class. Something small and fairly easy to use. I don't know much about all the new gadgets they have out today and I am not looking for something that's going to cost the bank. Is there some sort of small, mp3 or memory based device out there that you can do this with?

I experimented with a very cheap mp3 player/recorder called mach speed, the 1gb version cost me $35 or $40 on www.buy.com. It wasn't excellent and the interface wasn't perfect but I did manage to record my lecures most of the time and transferring the mp3 back to a laptop was a matter of a usb cable, copy and paste.
Creatve players, I believe, also reord directly into mp3 and probably have better quality and ease of use but you may want to check out the mach trio for a cheap solution.
Also make sure to bring your lapto and take copious notes, for me it always worked much better than recording the lectures, despite my best intentions I just couldn't bare having to listen to them all over again and fairly precise lecture notes take 5 minutes to read over, vs an hour or two of sloppy mp3 file listening, totally worth it.
cheers
